Power Management Design and Build had the pleasure of designing and manufacturing an Eco-Volt 100kVA power optimiser which was supplied through E2 Services for installation for use at Holkham.

Shortly afterwards, we manufactured a much larger Eco-Volt 500kVA power optimiser which was also supplied through E2 Services for use on a different part of the estate where leisure and visitor amenities are located.

Both power optimisers have given trouble free service for over four years, helping the estates team to enjoy cost reductions on the power needed to run the estate.

Holkham Hall in North Norfolk is the home of the Coke family and the Earls of Leicester. The hall sits amid the beautiful Holkham Estate which, in recent years, has expanded to include a holiday park, three cafés, several shops and an internationally acclaimed hotel.

There are opera and chamber music performances in the Marble Hall throughout the year and an open-air concert in the deer park during the summer, as well as an annual Country Fair.

Consultancy and High Voltage for ISG

A case study about our expertise at work in the Industrial sector

Power Management Design and Build was called in by KpH Environmental Services Ltd to work on the 11kV network for 20 Old Bailey, London EC4M 7BH, a prestigious office address opposite the Central Criminal Courts in London.

Kph Environment Services was commissioned to remove mechanical and electrical services ahead of the new fit out works by ISG plc, the prime contractor for Blackstone.

Our project included visits by one of our Senior Authorised Persons and one of our Authorised Persons to assess the status of the high voltage switchboard which fed the 4 x 11kV transformers.

Switching operations were undertaken to suit the schedule of works. One 11kV transformer was isolated and earthed and we issued the necessary documentation to allow the safe disconnection and removal of the associated low voltage switchboard.

A second transformer was restored to operation so that there would be sufficient lighting on the upper floors to allow strip out works to be undertaken safely. All of the High Voltage switching operations were completed across a Bank Holiday weekend.

The result was the successful completion of the electrical services for KpH Environmental Services, enabling ISG to make a prompt turnaround to the £59million scheme.

Consultancy and Installation for BBC World Service

A case study about our expertise at work in the Media and Entertainment sector

Power Management Design and Build was flown out to Cyprus by the BBC for an urgent intervention they needed on the power system that supplied the British East Mediterranean Relay Station (BEMRS) at Zygi, east of Limassol. The engagement came from a recommendation made by Andy West Associates.

The transmitter station is one of the largest of its kind in the world and broadcasts programmes created by BBC World Service in London.

Daily at 1400 GMT all transmitters are required simultaneously which means the working environment had to be very carefully managed without delays in reinstating any transmitter.

The project included replacing the vacuum bottle in the GEC 11kV circuit breakers, some of which had completed over 30,000 switching cycles.

We were responsible to oversee and sign the project off on behalf of the BBC, having satisfied ourselves that the team, including Areva T&D and site personnel, had completed the works. The intervention was delivered successfully and ahead of deadline.

High Voltage for Pinewood Studios

A case study about our expertise at work in the Media and Entertainment sector

Power Management Design and Build was asked by Andy West Associates on behalf of Pinewood Studios to provide an 11KV network and switchgear specification and design.

Having invested several million pounds in a new 10MVA connection Pinewood needed a design for an 11kV distribution system for the entire Pinewood Studios site.

We specified a new 11kV switchboard and designed a new 11kV ring main. Previously, Pinewood needed to use their own on-site generator for peak lopping which proved noisy, expensive and operationally impractical. The newly specified switchgear utilised vacuum switches to replace SF6 switches which were not environmentally friendly.

Our experts worked alongside the AWA electrical engineers to complete a critical project for this world renowned studios where TV and feature films are made, for example James Bond and Star Wars movies amongst others.

A senior consultant at Power Management Design and Build was called in by the Royal Opera House to work alongside their prime contractors Ove Arup and Schneider Electric.

The project was well advanced and the opening night was quickly approaching but sign-off by the distribution network operator (DNO) could not go ahead without an intervention that they deemed necessary.

By identifying the pre-load characteristics and by supplying and installing the proper remedial equipment, Power Management Design and Build consultants were able to assemble a team to work across weekends with just two shutdowns.

As a result the stage lighting was approved for operation by EDF.

"Your work assured the re-opening of the Royal Opera House could go ahead on time," said Mark White, Regional Manager at ETC Ltd.

Power Optimisation for Port of Felixstowe

As case study about our expertise at work in the Maritime and Marine sector

Eleven Eco-Lux power optimisers manufactured by Power Management Design and Build have been installed to serve the lighting control panels and deliver energy savings of upto 25%.

A special version of the Eco-Lux power optimiser was designed to withstand the harsh local environment at Port of Felixstowe, owned by Hutchison Ports, incorporating a larger frame to allow for greater heat dissipation. In addition, the windings were tropicalised to cope with the demands of the site.

The project came about because electrical control panel manufacturer, Wiremek Limited, working in close collaboration with Power Management Design and Build, were chosen to install new control panels.

Wiremek had previously replaced a substantial number of control panels on the Port’s lighting towers, each of which is fitted with approximately twelve 1kW high intensity discharge lamps, with switching and control gear in ground mounted cubicles to enable easy repair and servicing.

This project to supply eleven “Lighting Tower” control panels for berths for exceptionally large vessels. The panels are housed in custom built stainless steel cubicles to prevent rusting.

The refrigeration power facilities (Reefer Sockets) play an essential role in the unloading and loading of containers at Felixstowe, which is one of the largest and busiest container ports in Europe.

“This was the latest in a long line of projects to provide equipment of a special nature to the Port of Felixstowe all designed to perform in a very demanding environment” said Ian Gleed, Managing Director at Wiremek.

This project is another example of how manufacturers can jointly produce cost effective solutions for clients who want to reduce running costs as well as achieve environmental targets.

Wiremek and Power Management Design and Build have collaborated on major projects for customers across sectors including logistics, education, local government and commercial.

Power Savings for University of Westminster

A case study about our expertise at work in the Higher Education sector

Power Management Design and Build completed a project for the University of Westminster resulting in significant energy savings.

We installed four 280KVA Eco-Volt power optimisers at the Cleveland Street site in London which is fed via four 400 amp low voltage supplies which provided excessively high incoming voltage – between 420 and 425 volts.

The decision to include power optimisers as part of the power system was taken to cut costs and to reduce energy consumption.

The design and installation team overcame several challenges during the “Switchgear Positioning” phase.

Difficulty of access and lack of space to house the equipment in the basement location were the main issues. The solution was to build a bespoke unit to contain the switchgear, the Eco-Volt devices and ventilation.

The four Eco-Volt units cover approximately half the total building’s power capacity. Energy savings of between 8% and 15% were apparent from day one.

This project was tendered with a number of companies; the University of Westminster was looking for best practice, value for money, case studies of similar works carried out and an understanding of our requirements, which were subject to change. Power Management Design and Build have demonstrated professionalism from the procurement stage right up to delivery and have gone the extra mile to make this project a success” said Dexter Nicco at University of Westminster.
